Mercy Medical Expansion - Roseburg, Oregon

The expansion of Mercy Medical Hospital in Roseburg, OR included the addition of new ICU rooms, new offices, meeting rooms and a conference center. The master plan for the hospital grounds sought to expand the hospital further by creating a series of outdoor spaces for patients, employees and visitors to use and enjoy.

The design focused on two primary areas. First, a redesign of the parking lot incorporated a large entry plaza between the building and the parking area providing a transitional space as well as a place for eating, group gathering or simply relaxing. The second area focused on healing gardens that could be viewed from the ICU rooms. These gardens provide a lush landscape to enjoy from within the building with dense vegetation that attracts birds and butterflies, a flowing creek, and stone walls designed to recall the crumbling and moss laden walls often found on forest floors. The walls and vegetation also serve to provide screening from the main road and sidewalk ensuring a private space for patients and their visitors. The sound of trickling water and the views of flowers, plants and wildlife create a relaxing and inspiring atmosphere to encourage patients through the healing process.
